Irish basketball standing tall heading into postseason
It was a night that both Ardmore varsity squads would rather forget, but it for McGuinness, it added to the confidence and momentum as the regular season came to a close tonight.
The Lady Irish wasted no time getting points on the board, when Elyse Hight immediately called for a pass down low and gave the Irish a lead they would never lose. McGuinness went on a 13-0 run to start the game, before Ardmore finally made a shot with a minute left in the first quarter.
Ardmore could not find any rhythm on offense, which was disrupted greatly thanks to a solid Irish defensive effort. Coach Clark’s girls kept piling on the points, putting away the Lady Tigers 58-45.
While the Lady Irish had already beaten Ardmore by a comfortable margin earlier, Coach Durham’s squad had to prove they could handle Ardmore again.
The Irish needed overtime to beat the Tigers the first time, but in their second outing, all they needed was the first quarter.
McGuinness went in hot, and Ardmore struggled to score against a large Irish front court. Matt Christiansen rejected shots like it was going out of style, but the Irish offense was just as good.
With great size, the Irish were able to crash the boards and get back on the other end with no problem. There was no hangover from the Cascia Hall game with big games from Joe Edmonds and Miles Newcomb. Also, the Irish got it done in the paint with Matt Ross and Will Lienhard posting up.
Ardmore continually tried to put together a run that would get them back in the game, but the Irish were too much for an Ardmore team who had no flow on the offensive end or a player that was capable of spurring a comeback.
McGuinness can finally focus on the postseason, and will have ample time to rest before Guymon and Altus travel to McCarthy.
