4A State: What we learned from the quarterfinals

Unless you are a fan of teams getting blown out, this was not your week for football in 4A. Eight teams entered Friday still with high hopes of bring a gold ball home, but three teams were utterly embarrassed, and there was only one remotely close game out in Sallisaw. Let’s take a look back at what happened Friday night.

Clinton 49, Hilldale 14 – The last home game for the Clinton seniors was nothing short of spectacular. The Tornadoes completely dominated Hilldale, and the season for these Hornets is now over.  This game was well within hand  after Mitchell ran in three touchdowns and caught one from Clinton QB Garrison Mendoza to give Clinton a 35-7 lead at halftime.  Clinton will now travel to Oklahoma City Friday to play Catoosa for a spot in the state championship game.

Catoosa 27, Glenpool 0 – The only undefeated team left in 4A shut down the Warriors, backed by another great performance by Catoosa’s Cole Scheulen. The senior running back ran for three touchdowns and 217 rushing yards, which gave him 2000+ rushing yards on the season. Glenpool’s offense was non-existent. The Warriors passed for a total of 86 yards, and actually rushed for -6 yards. Catoosa will meet up with Clinton at Putnam City High School this Friday to try and extend their perfect season.

Wagoner 49, Woodward 0 – The Boomers shocked the state when they knocked off Douglass in the first round, and maybe Woodward was better than everyone thought. However, Wagoner, a team that had to travel out west, left with an 11-1 record and huge victory under their belt. The Bulldog defense was relentless, and the Boomers could not contain the Wagoner offense. The game was as ugly as it gets, and I bet Douglass is kicking themselves wondering if they would have done any better. Wagoner will make the trip to Sapulpa to take on Bishop McGuinness for a spot in the state title game.

McGuinness 28, Sallisaw 14- This was the only competitive game in 4A last Friday. If there was anything we truly learned from the other teams is that Wagoner, Catoosa, and Clinton are still darn good football teams and that reflects on their records. However, McGuinness was not supposed to be in this situation. About a month ago, the Irish were dealt with two straight losses, but something changed. Whatever it was, Irish look darn good as well. The offense can score at will and the defense will not let anything come easy. Sallisaw QB Ben Oberste had some success scoring in the first half, but after that, the defense did not allow any more points from the Diamonds. McGuinness hopes to win their ninth consecutive game against Wagoner, a team they have had plenty of success beating in the postseason in the past.
