Breaking down the final play from Friday’s Millwood game

Due to the fact that green and black is in our blood, I was not able to capture this play to its entirety, it cuts off midway as Millwood’s Larry Lambeth is going the distance of the feidl. However, let’s analyze the “controversial” blocked kick.

First, props to senior kicker Will Thompson, something I didn’t notice in realtime was who was the Irish player that jumped on the ball. It was Thompson, and if he could have reacted a second earlier, he might have been able to secure the ball.

Second, Millwood designed and executed this to perfection. After the game, a few of the Millwood players talked about how if everything went right, they could block the kick. I am not sure if scooping it up and running it 99 yards in to the endzone was a part of the plan, but it sure seemed like it.

Great job by the Falcons for not allowing any McGuinness players near Larry Lambeth. Seniors Drew Neuberger and Duncan Branum were they closest of any, and for a second it looked like Neuberger had a shot of grabbing a hold of the back of Lambeth’s jersey.

However, Neuberger was knocked to the ground, and the only necessary thing left for Millwood to do was to cross the goal line.

Superb effort by the Falcons, and even though McGuinness lost, these are the kind of games that make teams stronger. Coach Justin Jones and the team needs to embrace the loss and use it as motivation.

They need to know that the season is not over, and this is what happens when a team truly puts everything have in to one play. Not to take anything away from the Irish, but Millwood was a team on a mission on that play.

It will be interesting to see how the boys respond in Clinton, and I would not be surprised if Will Thompson works on driving the ball a bit higher. He had the right idea in making sure that the ball went long enough, it just so happened it played in to Millwood’s favor just as much.
