Lady Irish bring home first state title

As you walk in to the front entrance of Bishop McGuinness, you’ll see a nice collection of state championship trophies. However, since McGuinness has opened its doors, a girls basketball state championship trophy is nowhere to be found.

Coach Burch and the Lady Irish basketball team changed that on Saturday with a 44-36 victory over Tulsa East Central to claim the school’s first girls basketball title. The win finished the 2010-2011 season with a 27-2 record and a trophy that went to a group of girls who worked hard all season.

The best two teams in the state met at the Mabee Center, where McGuinness finished off an illustrious run. The Lady Irish suffered only two losses, but both were to 6A opponents in regular season tournaments.

The rest of the teams that faced the Lady Irish could not compare to what Burch put out on the floor. McGuinness averaged a whopping 22-point victory throughout their 29 game season, and with the leaders the team possessed, it was tough to argue this wasn’t the best team in 5A.

Congratulations to the Lady Irish from Irish On Deck, and we can’t wait for the girls to defend their title next season.
