Lady Irish Take 5A Swimming State Title
As promised, IOD wants to release the top sports stories from McGuinness. We’ve done football and basketball. However, in 2010, we plan on reporting on more Irish teams. Why not start off with your 2010 5A Swimming State Champions?
The Lady Irish won the 5A State Title this Saturday at Oklahoma City Community College. The Irish swimming attack was led by Lizzy Whitbeck who placed first in the 200 IM, 100 breaststroke, and placed first along side Erin Gaffney, Danielle Pena, and Amee Pena in the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay.
However, the McGuinness success didn’t stop at Whitbeck. Danielle Pena was victorious in the 500 Freestyle, and Amee Pena was the winner of the 100 Backstroke.
And if the Irish weren’t in first, they were fairly close.
Erin Gaffney placed third in the 200 Freestyle and placed fourth in the 100 Freestyle. Ivy Dolf was less than a second away from first in the 500 Freestyle, but as mentioned the 500 Freestyle winner was none other than Irish’s Danielle Pena.
It was nothing short of great day for the green and white, and hopefully that championship mentality will carry into tonight’s district playoff game between the Irish basketball team and Classen.
