Bishop Upends Southeast, 37-22
The last home game of the season was most certainly a great one to be at. McGuinness made Southeast look silly on defense, as they scored 24 unanswered points until Southeast finally was able to score in the third quarter. However, the Irish back-ups were the ones on the field, not the stingy defense that didn’t allow a point in Guymon.
The Irish offense was just as impressive as the defense. Jameel Whitney started things off with a 22 yard run into the end-zone. Whitney wasn’t done as he connected with David Krahl on a 31 yard passing touchdown.
McGuinness continued to attack the Spartans on the ground. By the end of the night, the Irish offense gained 282 rushing yards total. Part of that total was added by freshmen Danny Krenger scoring a touchdown on the goal line. Krenger is the only freshmen who skipped out on the ninth grade schedule, and was placed on varsity.
Overall the offense was what Coach Young would want. They executed well, and were able to find their way into the end zone without LaRone Richardson. The junior RB was sidelined due to an injury during the Guymon game. Richardson was missed, but the depth of the offense carried the Irish to victory.
One thing to worry about is the depth of the McGuinness defense. You could argue that the back-ups were lazy, because of the lopsided score. However, the defense shouldn’t be giving up a 75 yard run to a team that is inferior to them. Southeast speed was a big threat to McGuinness, and the Spartans had a solid night rushing. Time wasn’t Southeast’s side, and didn’t allow a rally by Southeast.
Irish improve to 7-2 on the season. They’ll finish off the schedule with Elk City next week on the road. Then it will be time for the play-offs to begin.
The Irish hold the second seed in their district, and Weatherford will claim the title. The play-offs will be proving ground to see if the Irish can get revenge, and win without Sam Crabtree and a matured football team.
