Irish Shut Down Guthrie, 12-7

The preparation for the season opener was not the easiest for the Irish. McGuinness coming off a disappointing season, the year before, were looking to redeem themselves. Guthrie beat Bishop 21-3 in the 2008 season opener, and ended McGuinness’ 28 game win streak. It was the Irish who were on the right side this time, and held the Blue Jays, 12-7.

The Irish and Jays fans both got to see what Quinn Shanbour was made of. In Shanbour’s debut, he scored on a 60 yard passing touchdown to star WR Sam Crabtree. The more important thing, Shanbour was confident in his team, and got the job done. IOD.com was able to catch up with Quinn after the game:

IOD: Prior to the game, Quinn was dead silent, how do you focus and get in to the zone?
Shanbour: (I) just think about my plays, and think about my game plan. Know what you have to do, and do it.

IOD: What were you thoughts when you connected for 60 yards with Sam Crabtree, after a bad first series?
Shanbour: My line did a great job blocking. I appreciate them so much. Sam was just open, I threw it up, he’s an athlete, he can run, he out ran the guy.

IOD: Now that you’ve played a 5A team, does this give you anymore preparation for next week (against Bishop Kelley)?
Shanbour: Bishop Kelley is just as good, if not better. Guthrie was a respectable opponent, and I have many friends on their team. Greats kids, I’m just ready for Bishop Kelley.

IOD: Being a sophomore, did you think much if your going to win or lose?
Shanbour: I knew they had a great defense, and I knew we had to step it up on offense.  Our defense had been struggling these past couple of weeks in our scrimmages.  After tonight and how we played, I think Bishop Kelley is going to be preparing for us, and I hope for the best.

Quinn wasn’t the only McGuinness player who had a solid game. Let’s not forget the great efforts of the Bishop defense. The Irish held Guthrie 12-7 for three quarters, and this was a big help to McGuinness turning the ball over and eating the clock. The big nasties on the D-line rushed Guthrie’s freshmen QB Bryan Dutton, and put the pressure on all night. Guthrie had no answer, and Bishop were able to attain their first win of the season, and prove to Oklahoma they aren’t to be taken lightly.
