New Season, New Start, Irish Await Guthrie

The 2009 football season is just about to get underway, but the Irish have a few road bumps to get over before their rematch with the Guthrie Blue Jays.  This Thursday be sure to stop by Pribil Stadium at 7:00 pm, to catch McGuinness’ first exhibition of the year against Lawton MacArthur.

This will be a home game for the Irish, and the next week Bishop plays in the Pepsi Pigskin Classic in Mustang.  While Coach Young is looking forward to these match-ups, there is no question that he is ready to sink his teeth into Guthrie on opening night.

Last year, Guthrie embarrassed McGuinness at their house, 21-3.  The Irish lost that game, and tripped up the next week against rival Bishop Kelley.  Luckily, McGuinness pulled it all together, and ended the season with a trip to the 4a Oklahoma State Championship Game against Glenpool.  This year will be different, Guthrie will travel to Oklahoma City, and McGuinness is anxiously awaiting September 4.

Big questions do lie in the quarterback situation.  After losing last year’s starter Ryan Randolph, Bishop has narrowed it down to two players.  Those players would be sophomore Quinn Shanbour and junior David Krahl.  Both have little-to-none experience in big game situations, but Coach Young will have to teach them fast.

There is no clear favorite, and a lot of weight is being put on junior RB LaRone Richardson.  Richardson in the backfield is a big help, and whoever the quarterback is will have senior WR Sam Crabtree.

IrishonDeck.com will be covering all of the action on Thursday, so check back for updates, and follow us on Twitter!
